Heating Materials Used In Industrial Heaters
The need for controlled heating has been a priority since industries began centuries ago. There is an immense demand for durability, adaptability and longevity. Heaters commonly found at home are not applicable for industry because of design factors. The heating elements used were not designed for longevity and would deteriorate and oxidize in a matter of time. Thus to meet the growing demand of fast growing industrial heaters, manufacturers developed different types of heating elements specifically for the industries.
Let’s start with resistance wires. Usual materials for wires is metal. Metals allows current flow but still offer little resistance. Because of this resistance, heat is generated. Metals usually used are nichrome, a compound of nickel and chrome. If compounded in balanced amount, the chrome metal coats the whole metal with its oxides to protect from oxidation. Resistance wires were commonly found in industrial furnaces.
Next is tubular or heating element inside a tube. This also uses metals like resistance wires but were fitted inside another metal tube for protection. To ensure finest dielectric strength and greatest heat conductivity, a coating of alumina powder with high purity was used as a coating. The tubes being used will be made of a more suitable metal based on its application. Coppers were used for water and other non-corrosive fluids. Steel, if material was to be immerse in oil. Stainless steel was for fluids that are corrosive and some food processing. Titanium and Incoloy were designed for higher temperatures. Tubular elements are usually twisted in all shapes and sizes depending on its function.
Third is the well-known heat lamp. This one emit heat by radiation and that makes it different from the previous elements. A heating element usually tungsten was fitted inside a glass enclosure and gives off heat when electric current was passes thru them. They were designed to emit as much heat from infrared as possible. Sporadically using a foil made of gold to reflect back some of escaping radiation to focus it more. To protect from high temperature, quartz are being used for higher rated lamps instead of plastic.
