Australian Beach Is The Scene Of Bizarre Kangaroo Rescue
On Australia’s Gold Coast a strange but valiant life saving event took place where a passer by pulled a drowning kangaroo from the water.
Local surfer and extreme sports fan Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It kept disappearing under the surface and moving very erratically. As he shielded his eyes to get a better look he saw that it was in fact an infant kangaroo that had bizarrely found its way quite a distance out to sea. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of his trusty surfboards out he went to see if he could help the poor creature.
The roo was pretty exhausted when he reached it. The waves kept dumping it under the water and time and again, and it had been out their for a while by all accounts. Niel did make an attempt to hoist the animal up onto his surfboard, but the kangaroo wasn’t very happy with this and jumped back into the sea. A number of people in kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Seeing that his method wasn’t working, Neil decided to instead drag the kangaroo back along side his surfboard. Thankfully both arrived back at the beach in one piece, albeit a little shaken up.
Why the little kangaroo decided to head out to sea has yet to be explained by animal experts, however they have given him the name Ian, as a humorous tribute to swimming gold medalist Ian Thorpe. “Swimming is not something that kangaroos do very well” claims Kirk Jackson of the Nature Reserve Of Queensland. He continued to say that kangaroos would only ever enter water to escape a predator or if they knew its depth was lower than their chest, but perhaps this one was a bit simple.
Ian is now back to full strength and has been eating well at an animal shelter close by. He is due be let out shortly when everyone is happy and the release site is going to be around 40 miles inland. Modesty is something that Neil seems to have bucket loads of, passing off his actions as nothing more than “paddling out and bringing the poor fella back where he belongs”.
